Oil leak threat to McLaren's Wigram win

Bruce McLaren won the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy in 96min 4.7sec, lowering the 96min 38.7sec race record set by Stirling Moss in a Lotus in 1962, after holding off Surtees and then Brabham. Tyre experts said McLaren could have done another eight or nine laps, but oil pressure was falling and an oil leak had lost a considerable amount of lubricant. Brabham's final lap time of 1:18.3 broke Moss's 1:20.1 lap record.

Lap times

  • Jack Brabham (Brabham-Climax): 1:18.3 lap record
  • Stirling Moss (Lotus): 1:20.1 lap record
  • Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax 2.7 litre): 144 mph top speed

Facts

  • McLaren lowered the Lady Wigram Trophy race time record from 96min 38.7sec (Moss, 1962) to 96min 4.7sec in 1963.
  • Brabham had to pit on lap 44 of the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy to top up oil, losing the lead to McLaren, who then led by more than 80 seconds.
  • At the finish of the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy McLaren and Brabham were a lap ahead of Maggs, Hyslop and the rest; by lap 65 McLaren was a lap ahead of Brabham.
  • A 100 mph lap of Wigram was not reached in the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy; a strong easterly blew throughout the day.
  • Hyslop was the first New Zealander home in the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy and just failed to catch Maggs for third.

Attendance dwindles: crowd fewer than 1962

Attendance at the 1963 Lady Wigram Trophy meeting disappointed the Motor Racing Club; no official figure was available but it was below 1962's 15,000 paid admissions. The largest Wigram crowd was about 35,000 in 1954 when Ken Wharton raced the BRM V16. C. G. McIver praised the Christchurch Canine Obedience Club's dogs for patrolling the fences against gate-crashers.

Facts

  • The 1962 Lady Wigram meeting drew 15,000 paid admissions; the 1963 crowd was smaller.
  • The largest crowd at Wigram racing was about 35,000 in 1954, when Ken Wharton raced the supercharged 16-cylinder BRM.
  • The second largest Wigram crowd was an estimated 30,000 in 1960, and in 1961, in heavy rain, 22,000.
  • The Christchurch Canine Obedience Club patrolled the Wigram fences with dogs in 1963 as a trial to stop free entry; the club planned more patrols the next year.
