Moss's gamble paid and skill won trophy

Stirling Moss won the eighth Lady Wigram Trophy in the 2.5-litre R.R.C. Walker Lotus in a new race record of 96min 38.7sec (just over 93 mph), 4min 3.3sec inside Brabham's 1960 time. Brabham and Surtees shared a new lap record of 1:20.1 on lap 43 and Moss equalled it five laps later. Moss gambled on soft tyres that left the rears bald, and only the first five completed all 71 laps; 14 of 18 starters finished.

Facts

  • Moss's 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy winning time of 96min 38.7sec was 4min 3.3sec inside Brabham's 1960 race record and averaged just over 93 mph.
  • The lap record at Wigram was shared for the first time in the race's history in 1962: Moss, Brabham and Surtees all did 1:20.1.
  • Only the first five finishers completed all 71 laps of the 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy; there were eighteen starters and fourteen finishers.
  • Moss's blue Walker Lotus had less power than the Coopers but he made up for it with skill and a tyre gamble: the rear tyres had no tread at the finish.
  • Angus Hyslop was the first New Zealander to finish the 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy, sixth, since McLaren is regarded as an international driver.
  • Brabham and Surtees swapped positions on at least two occasions during the 1962 race.
