Field all the way for fine win

Stirling Moss, in a Lotus, won the 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy after leading from the first lap, crossing the line about 15.8sec ahead of Brabham (Cooper), with Surtees third and McLaren fourth, in front of a large crowd in 85-degree heat. Moss chose rain tyres for the extra grip, and the first four places stayed largely unchanged. Bandini was lapping at about 1:24 and Flockhart at 1:25.1 early on. A protest by R. J. Blackburn against the Mini-Coopers of McLaren and Flockhart was upheld before the saloon race, so McLaren did not start and Flockhart declined to race.

  • Several drivers emptied water over themselves in the 85-degree heat before the January 1962 Lady Wigram race.
  • The 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy grid was changed before the race after Cardon's Lycoming was withdrawn after an accident in the sports car race, with Greenville (Lotus) and R. Eade (Maserati) added at the rear.
  • A protest by R. J. Blackburn that the Mini-Coopers of McLaren and Flockhart did not comply with maker's equipment specifications (windows, seats, grilles) was upheld by the stewards before the saloon car race.
  • McLaren said his tyres wore out in about 13 laps on a previous practice day; Moss's high hysteresis tyres wore quickly but lasted.
  • A prize of 100 bottles of New Zealand wine and 100 pounds for the first 100 mph lap went unclaimed in 1962.
