Surtees, five times worid motor-cycle champion, Is driver B. McLaren has to watch, for he is dedicated to the task of reaching the top in Formula One racing. Only 27, Surtees found at the end of 1960 that there were no fresh worlds to conquer on two wheels, and Ike many motor-cycle champions before him he decided to take to four wheels. Given a place • with team Lotus in 1960 for occasional drives, he proved his ability to turn in fast laps with the confidence of a highly experienced driver. Throughout 1961, when he drove for the then Yeoman Credit (now Bowmaker Yeoman) racing team he suffered the same disadvantages as other Cooper drivers. At Wigram however, he will find himself on a more equal basis as far as cars are concerned. R. Salvadori has been the motor racing scene since the early post-war years, and is now in his late thirties. In 1959, with C. Shelby, in an Aston Martin, he won the classic 24-hour Le Mans, but he has as yet falled to win a grande epreuve, and is sometimes quoted as the best driver never to have had major Formula One success. He has done his share in the testing and development new cars. being closely connected with Connaught and with the eatiy development of Cooper. Salvadori was number one driver in the ill-fated Aston Martin venture into Formula One, when a good car was produced just too late to meet with success. When the project was terminated, he went with the former racing driver, R. Parnell, to the new Yeoman Credit team. R. Flockhart is a highlysuccessful driver of all types of cars, and has reached the top in sports car racing by winning twice at Le Mans for Jaguar. Like Salvadori, however, he has found a grande epreuve win elusive. Flockhart was for some time the chief test driver for B.R.M. Flockhart He has shown he is capable! of putting up times close it! not equal to that of the champions. An example of this was at the 1959 New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore, when, although delayed by a faulty start, he came quickly up through the field to third position behind Moss and Brabham before a broken oil breather forced him to retire. At Wigram the same year he put in the first 90 mile an hour lap on the course. Last year at Ardmore he drove an elderly 2500 C.C. Cooper, but still managed to get to College Corner first. and in spite of a bad spin later in the race he gained a good fourth place. Driving his own new Lotus at Wigram. he vill undoubtedly be a force to be reckoned Brabham Brabham, McLaren and Moss need little introduction to followers of motor racing. or for that matter to followers of the Lady Wigram Trophy Race. The three have figured pro-1 minentlv in the Wigram event i durng the iast few years, and in most cases have split up the honours amongst them- 'selves. yV RACE 1962 indeed they tale in every while McLaren came in Lady Wigram. in 1960 Brab iourin ham led nicLaren home. last This year the battle will year it was again Brabham again be on, both Moss and first, this time ahead of Moss, McLaren doing their best to prevent Brabham from winning the event for the third time in succession. L. Bandini is a driver as yet unknown in New Zealand motor racing. In Hurope he considered as one of the up-and-coming drivers, and he has the reputation of being very fast. He will drive the latest Cooper Maserati with which he put up a good showing in the atrocious conditions at Ardmore, and it wil be interesting to see how he per- Bandini forms on the fast Wigram has often been asked circuit. why such a good driver was Brabham and McLaren. now Aged 24, he raced last year not racing for his own team, that the former has left the for Scuderia Centro-Sud, the has explained oil company Cooper team, will be fighting major training establishment commitments have so far preeach other all the way, 35 McLaren for Italian drivers.
