Wigram has seen famous overseas drivers

R. M. Carr notes that four overseas drivers who raced in the Wigram internationals were later killed: Ken Wharton (Ardmore, 1957), Archie Scott-Brown (Spa, 1958), Peter Whitehead (rally crash in France, 1958) and Stuart Lewis-Evans (burned in a Vanwall at Casablanca, 1958). Whitehead was the only driver to win an international race in New Zealand three times, at Wigram in 1954, 1956 and 1957. Tony Gaze, second in 1954 and 1956, was a Battle of Britain pilot, and Reg Parnell retired from racing in 1957.

Facts

  • Ken Wharton, Archie Scott-Brown, Peter Whitehead and Stuart Lewis-Evans, all Wigram internationals drivers, died racing or rallying by the end of 1958 or earlier.
  • Peter Whitehead won the Lady Wigram Trophy in 1954, 1956 and 1957, the only driver to win an international race in New Zealand three times.

Wigram Has Seen Famous Overseas Drivers - Ispecially written by R. It mas a eruel twist fortune that Wharton shoula- have travelled 12,000 miles to mees his late on this side of the world. Undoubtedly the most commanding personality met at Wigram was Archie Scott-Brown, the dynamic one-handed Englishman who lived for motor racing and 'established himself as a leading driver in spite of his disability. Scott-Brown was never happier than' when tie was driving his car on the limit, but at the Spa- Francorchamps circuit last yéar, ne too, was killed, while driving a Lister-Jaguar. Motor racing is a sport which can strike at anyone anywhere, and even the best drivers recognise the risks'involved.. Peter Whitehead the only driver ever to have won an international motor race/ in New Zealand three times-at Wigram in 1954, 1956, and 1957was & clever yet restrained competitos. tank commander in North Africa in the last war, Whitehead was a tactician of the frst order, a direct 'contrast to the "press-on" personality of Scott-Brown. Waitehead was killed in a rally in France late last gear when the Jaguar he was driving with his brother Graham skidded over a precipice. Slightly-built and softly-spoken Stuart Lewis-Evans was the last! person one would picture as a top grand prix driver. Lewis-! Evans adopted a fatalistic attitude towards the sport and believed no-one knew when their time was up. -His time was pitifully KEN WHARTON ghort, for at Casablanca last year: he was fatally burned in thel pyre of a Vanwall in which he was endeavouring to stave off the Ferrari threat and give Stirling Moss the world drivers' championship. Those are not the only famous drivers, who have graced the Wigram circuit. Tony Gaze was always reluctant to speak of bis exploits, but his second placings! in 1954 and 1956 showed bis ability. Few knew that this same driver was once a Battle of Britain Aghter pilot, who flew for more than a yeaf with Douglas Bader. Reg Parnell, raced was similar in i see 10 Does real. personality to Parnell, Britain's • veteran motor . racings retired from the sport in 1957. Now head of the Aston Martin competitions department, he must feel somewhat lucky to have survived 22 years, of racing on the world's circuits.! International drivers can earn big money in the sport, but who would dispute that they ears ¿every penny of it?
