newsWigram race next year: date fixed for January 24
The fifth international Lady Wigram Trophy race was set for 24 January 1959. NZ Grand Prix secretary F. Perkins was in Europe negotiating for overseas drivers. The Motor Racing Club's annual meeting also elected officers and confirmed the NZ beach race championship at South Brighton on July 20, subject to Marine Department approval, with 26 entries.

newsSporting notebook: Moss, Shelby and Brabham signed
Auckland organiser Frank Perkins signed Stirling Moss, Carroll Shelby and Jack Brabham for the early-1959 NZ series, though Moss's appearance at Wigram and Invercargill depended on his Argentine commitments. Brabham was almost certain to come to Wigram, and Shelby, who had raced for Centro Sud, might too. The column speculates Moss might drive one of Rob Walker's 2.2-litre Coopers, and praises John Cooper's design approach. John Campbell-Jones had made the only direct inquiry to the Motor Racing Club.

newsTerms for Moss, Shelby and Brabham not yet received
The Christchurch Motor Racing Club had not yet received word on the terms under which Frank Perkins engaged Moss, Carroll Shelby and Jack Brabham for Ardmore in January 1959. The two organisations were working together, though not all Auckland drivers would necessarily appear at Wigram. Brabham would drive a Cooper and Shelby probably a 250F Maserati like Ross Jensen's.

Reventlow Automobiles of Los Angeles, run by Lance Reventlow, asked the Motor Racing Club about entering its Chevrolet-powered Scarab sports-racer in the Lady Wigram Trophy, possibly with a 5.5-litre single-seater. Stirling Moss's engagement was confirmed and Brabham and Shelby were expected at Wigram. The 1959 dates: Ardmore Dec 13 and Jan 10 (Grand Prix), Lady Wigram Trophy Jan 24, Dunedin Jan 31, Teretonga Feb 7. The column also covers Mike Hawthorn's remarks on Grand Prix safety, a book by John Wyer, and Moss's win in last year's Italian Grand Prix at 120.28 mph.
