English entrant Dick Gibson drove through Christchurch traffic in a small rental car before taking his 2-litre Formula I Cooper (a replica of Stirling Moss's Argentine Grand Prix winner) to practice. A West Country motor dealer on a global racing tour, he last raced in England with the Cooper team including Ronnie Moore, was second in the Oulton Park Gold Cup, and won the Johannesburg Grand Prix trophy race last year. His mechanic Derek Edwards had been with Leslie Marr's Connaught in 1954.
