Jack Brabham, winner of the NZ Grand Prix at Ardmore a week earlier in a bored-out 2.2-litre Formula I Cooper, was tipped to win the Lady Wigram Trophy, having finished about 10 seconds behind Whitehead in 1957. Challengers included Archie Scott-Brown's Lister-Jaguar, Ross Jensen's ex-Stirling Moss 250F Maserati, Ron Roycroft's 4.5-litre Ferrari, Pat Hoare's new 3-litre Ferrari, 20-year-old Bruce McLaren in a works Cooper-Climax, Ron Frost and Frank Shuter's 8CLT Maserati. About 25 entries were expected.
Facts
- Five of the six Lady Wigram Trophy races up to 1957 had been won by single-seater racing cars.
- Coopers shine on the 70 mph curves, of which Wigram has more than Ardmore.
