previewOverseas drivers sign up for Lady Wigram Trophy
Australian Arnold Glass (Super Squalo Ferrari) and Englishman Dick Gibson (Formula I Cooper) signed for the 150-mile 1958 Lady Wigram Trophy, while Lewis-Evans and Salvadori would not be available after Ardmore. The Motor Racing Club was still negotiating with Scott-Brown and Brabham, and with so many Grand Prix cars owned by New Zealanders (Shuter's two 4CLT Maseratis, Hoare's 3-litre Ferrari) it could be selective with entries. Frank Cantwell would race a Tojeiro-Jaguar.
Facts
- The Canterbury Car Club planned the C. W. F. Hamilton Trophy race on the Southbridge circuit in December 1957.
- The 1958 New Zealand Grand Prix was set for 11 January at Ardmore.

previewLady Wigram Trophy may be most open race in series yet
With 25 entries received for the 25 January 1958 race, the Lady Wigram Trophy looked the most open yet. Jack Brabham, who had just won the NZ Grand Prix in a 2.2-litre Cooper, was favourite, with Scott-Brown (Lister-Jaguar), Gibson (Cooper) and Glass (Ferrari) the other visitors. New Zealanders had taken second to fourth at Ardmore: Ross Jensen (250F Maserati), Ron Roycroft (4.5-litre Ferrari) and Pat Hoare (3-litre Ferrari). The sports car race drew its best field and 18 cars were in the 25-mile saloon race.
Facts
- Whitehead's 1957 winning speed in the Lady Wigram Trophy was 81.46 mph.
- The Lady Wigram Trophy had been won by a single-seater every year except 1949, when Morrie Proctor's Brooklands Riley won at 66.17 mph.
- Brabham won the 1958 New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore in a 2.2-litre Cooper.
- Sports car entries for 1958 included Frank Cantwell's Tojeiro-Jaguar, Arthur Kennard's Healey-Corvette and several Jaguars and Austin-Healeys.

Overseas Drivers
Sign Up for Lady
Wigram Trophy
Two overseas drivers have
signed up to compete in the 150
mile Lady Wigram Trophy race
at Christchurch in January.
They are the Austrauan Amok
Glass (Super Squato Ferrari,
and the Englishman, Dick Gibson (Formula I Cooper).
Ar present the Motor Racing
Club, sponsor of the trophy
race, is still negotiating for
some of the drivers from overseas who will compete in the
New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore on January 11.
Financial Arrangements
But already it is evident that
neither Stuart Lewis-Evans nor
Rey Salvadori who will drive
Connaughts at Ardmore will be
available for Wigram. It is
understood that their cars will
be sold immediately after the
Grand Priz and these two
drivers will fy bome to Eng

The other two drivers booked
for Ardmore are Archie Scott-
Brown (Lister-Jaguar) and the
Australian. Jack Brabham
(Formula I Cooper). It is pos
sible that they will appear at
Wigram but all will depend
upon agreement on financial
arrangements.
Good Prospects
However, the position is suct
to-day that even if these two
drivers do not come south the
race will lose little. There are
now so many first-class Grand
Prix cars in the country owned
by New Zealanders that it is
likely that the club will have to
be quite selective in its acceptance of entries for the main
event.
Prospects of New Zealand
drivers having a clean-up in the
international events this season
have never been better
they are to day. Two local men

Frank Caniwell, another local
man will be racing a new Tojeiro-Jaguar sports car—one of
the fastest in its class and in
other parts of the country there
are numerous new fast cars to
build up a topfight field.
The season start in
earnest next Saturday with the
opening meeting at the Invercargill Teretonga Park circuit.
There will be a big contingent
of North Island men racing
there as well as a few local
drivers and the main event of
about 80 miles should at least
provide some sort of a Jardstick to judge prospects for the
later events in the season

able victory in the New Zealand
Grand Prix at Ardmore last Saturday.
Brabham' is no stranger to
Wigram. He ran second to
Whitehead last year in a Formula II Cooper.
The balance of-the overseas contingent will consist
of the two Englishmen,
Archie Scott-Brown (Lister-
Jaguar) and Dick Gibson
(Cooper Formula II) and the
Australian, Arnold. _ Glass
(Super Squalo Ferrari).
Scott-Brown,, one of the personalities of British motor sport,
looks the best of the rest of the
overseas drivers. Driving his
exceptionally fast sports car he
was running in second place at
Auckland when he had to retire
with suspension trouble.
New Zealanders took second,
third and fourth places at Ardmore. They were Ross Jensen
(250F Maserati), Ron Roycroft
(4}-litre Ferrari) and Christchurch's Pat Hoare (3-litre Ferrari, respectively.
Entry Awaited
So far Jensen has not sent in
an entry, but no doubt he will
be on the starting grid on Satur
day January 25, as he will be
looking for points in the Association of New Zealand Car
Cluh's gold star competition.
These three drivers conld
give Brabham and Scott-
Brown something to think
about and there are others
who must also be conceded
place-getters" chances. They.
include the Levin driver
Bon Frost (Cooper Formula
ID, Gavin Quirk (250F
Maserati) and Mery Neil
(Cooper-Climax).
Quirk, so far, has not been
able to take full advantage of his
car through lack of experience,
and Neil, who romped away
with the: Teretonga Park race
at Invercargill late last year,
may find his car a bit under powered for Wigram.
Significantly the . Lady Wigram Trophy has been won by a
single-seater racing car each
time with one exception. That
was the first race in 1949 when
Morrie Proctor, driving a
Brooklands Riley won at 66.17
miles an hour. Last year Whitehead in a Ferrari won at 81.46
miles an hour.
Sports Cars
The sports car race has drawn
the best field yet, there being a
bevy of Jaguars and Austin-
Healeys as well as Frank Cantwell's Tojeiro - Jaguar, and
Arthur Kennard's Healey-Corvette.
Eighteen cars have been
entered for the 25-mile saloon
car Ice. They are representatives of most of the late
model production cars to be
seen on local saleroom floors.
With two I W 3.4 Jaguars to
add flavour to the race this
event, from the point of view
of the man in the street with
no particular knowledge of motor
racing, could be one of the best
events of the day.
