Skating Rink
f'raught with incldent, It was
the most exciting trophy race to
date.
Oll spewed on the sizzling circuit in the carly stages turned
it into a skating rink.
After one lap, Reg Parnell,
Whitehead's team-mate, brought
his super Squalo Perrari into
the pits repair _ a broken
throttle linkage. He got going
again, but recurrence the
trouble put him out for good
after seven laps.
Hefty Horace Gould, after
working all night on his car,
drove in fourth position for
lifty-one laps. He stopped afler
forty-five laps for a drink of
water and got going agaln, but
the heat and exhaustion took
him out of the race:
He brought his 250r Maserati
into his pit alter firty-one laps;
slumper down in his seat, he
had to be llfted from the car.
Retirements came thick and
fast. Parnell was the first to go,
and by the end of the race It
was by no means clear how
many of the original twenty-six
starters were taking part in it.
However It appeared that at
least half had fallen by the wayside.
The winner, Whitelead,
had an armchair delve. Ho

necond place in the third lap,
and , took tho lead in tlie
eighth lap.

further back than third. He
overtook Roycroft after about
twenty laps. But, Just as Brabham could make no impression
on Whitehead, so Roycroft could
make no impression on Brabham.
Sizzling Pace
Whitehead set a sizzling pace,
turning in laps better than 80
miles an hour for a considerable
part of the journey and going
through non-stop.
On the other hand, Brabham,
alter forty-eight laps, when he
had bullt up a fair margin on
Roycroft, stopped'to take on oil
and have a drink.
Boycroft slipped by him
during the stop but, two
Ларм later, Brabham was
back In second place and
going away from Roycroft
once more.
Gould, who did not practise,
was given a position in the
second row on the starting grid.
After two or three laps it was
obvious that neither he nor his
cal was on form. As he came
down the pit straight he gestured incomprehensibly to hls
pit crew.
He treated the tricky S-bend
with great respect and, in fact
at no stage looked a potentlai
race winner.
Well Ahead
Sports car drivers Ross Jensen and Gibbons acquitted
themscives well. Always steady
and never spectacular, they kept
well ahead of some cars which
on paper had looked consider•
ably faster.
Roycroft, by virtue of an 87.56
miles an hour practice lap, took
the pole position on the starting
grid !. Outside him were Whitehead, Parnell. and Brabham. In
the second row were Gibbons.
Syd Jensen, and Gould. Behind
them again were Frank Shuter
(Maserati). Ross Jensen, Tom
Clarke (H.W.M.), and Allan Freeman (Lago Talbot).
At the drop of the flag Parnell surged to the . Iront, with
Roycroit, Whitehead, and Gould
next. As they entered the frst
bend, 150 yards away. Roycraft
was in front.
With a lap completed, Roy.
croft led Gould, Whitehead, and
Brabham, Parnell, much to the

lish racing driver this
ri for his third successive
last year. He averaged
disappointment of the crowd,
coasted into the pits.
As Roycroft came round agaln,
Parnell started and. although a
lap behind. led into the hangar
bend.
This manoeuvre appeared to
give Whitehead a chance. They
raced for several laps in this
lashion and on the elghth lap,
when Parnell had finally pulled
out. Whitehead was in front.
From then on, he dictated his
own terms and crept away from
Roycroft. With a quarter of the
distance gone there was a large
gap between • Whitehead and
Roycroft. Brabham was catching Roycroft.
It appeared that Roycroft bad
more power than he could use
on the now greasy surface and
his brakes seemed to be fading
a little.
On the other hand, Brabham's
light, rear-engined Cooper
seemed to revel in the tricky
conditions and Brabham himsell
seemed' to be having a happy
day out.
Lolly Papers
As he flashed past the pits, he
flicked away a lolly paper each
time. His fellow-Australian,
young Allan Mackay, had a less
conventional eating habit.
Well back in the field in
his Cooper Climax sports
car, he chewed solidly on a
piece of green rag.
Time after time the flag
marshals put out the yellow and
red signal indicating there was
oll on the track. As Reg Par•
nell watched he sald: "It's a
shame. Some of these chaps have
overfilled their oil tanks and it's
spoiling the race."
But the race went relentlessly
on ana, obviously, the crowd,
variously estimated between
25,000 and 35,000, was thrilled.
When it was over and Whitehead made his lap of honour
garlanded with the laurel leaves
the crowd surged to the edge
of the circuit to cheer him. It
was a popular victory.
