Keen competition in Wigram Trophy

At least twenty-five cars would face the starter in the 150-mile Lady Wigram Trophy, expected to be another Ferrari festival with Parnell and Whitehead in 3.5-litre Super Squalos and Roycroft in his 4.5-litre Ferrari. Gould's 250F Maserati was the puzzle, Ross Jensen drove Whitehead's Monza Ferrari like that in which Ken Wharton died at Ardmore, and Brabham's disc-braked Cooper Climax headlined the 76-mile sports car race.

Facts

  • Ken Wharton died in 1957 in a Monza Ferrari crash at the New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore.
  • The 1957 Lady Wigram Trophy sports car race was 76 miles.
  • Roycroft had raced at Wigram every year since the first Lady Wigram race in 1949.

Parnell will be making the Lady Wigram Trophy Race next Saturday one of the last of his racing career. KEEN COMPETITION IN WIGRAM TROPHY AT last twentyis cors will face the starter in the Lady Wigram Trophy race next Saturday, and it looks as though, for the first few laps at least, the circuit will be almost as crowded as Colombo Street on a summer Friday night. But speed is the thing that counts at Wigram, and so it is likely that before the first 20 of the 150 miles are covered the field will be well strung out and the wheat will be pretty well sorted from the chaff. On paper it looks as though the wheat will consist mainly • Englishmen Reg Parnell, Peter Whitehead, and Horace Gould, Jack Brabham, of Australia, and New Zealanders Ron Royeroft, Ross Jensen, and Bob. Gibbons. And, still on paper, the race looks like being another Ferrari festival. Parnell, winner of last week's New Zealand Grand Prix and team-mate Peter Whitehead will be driving their 3t-litre Super Squalo models, and Roycroft will handle his 4s-litre car. The rest of the wheat is mixed. Gould will have his 250F Maserati, Gibbons a D type Jaguar sports car, and Jensen. Whitehead's Monza Ferrari sports—a car similar in every respect to that in which Ken Wharton crashed to his death at Ardmore. It would be expecting a great deal of the sports cars to head the monoposto racers, just as it would be expecting a lot of the little Formula II Cooper, which will be driven by Brabham. Possibilities On this basis it looks as though Parnell, Whitehead, Gould, and Roycroft will sort it out among themselves. And of the quartet, New Zealander Roycroft looks about the most likely of the bunch. In the Grand Prix he had the measure of Parnell and Whitehead in the early stages and it was failing brakes and heat eshaustion that put him out of the race. Parnell's win was probably the result of his patience. He let Whitehead fight out the early laps with Roycroft and that fight cost Whitehead his brakes also. Thus Parnell was able to head him in the laiter stages. On the fast, onen-cornered Wigram circuit brakes do not play such an important part. Speed and acceleration are the things that really count, along with experience. Roycroft has raced at Wigram every year since the first race in 1949 and he knows the circuit like the back of his hand. The same can be said of Whitehead. who has won the last two trophy races, each time with Ferrari. The big puzzle in the race is likely to be the Gould Maserati. Luck did not go Gould's way at Auckland. He was feeling off colour on the day and the car was not just as good as it should have been. Things should be different next Saturday and the Maserati could give the Ferraris something to think about. Sports car drivers Gibbons and Jensen should be up in the minor places, just as they were at Auckland, and between them they should provide a fair share of the afternoon's excitement for these cars are very evenly matched. Although the remainder of the large field looks outclassed, it could be that one of the Cooper Climax sports cars or one or other of the more elderly racers could finish well up. Sports Cars The sports car race of 76 miles should provide some interesting racing. Main interest will most likely centre on Brabham, the Cooper works driver, who will handle his dise-braked Cooper Climax. This little sports car is very quick indeed and may give Gibbons with the D type Jaguar something to think about. 22-1-57 MOTORCYCLING ENTRIES FOR WIGRAM HANDICAP Six motor-cycle races will be held before the Lady Wigram trophy race at Wigram on Saturday.
