Wigram Trophy race

A letter signed Edelbrock supports a protest by 'XK120' against the RNZAF cancelling the 1955 Lady Wigram Trophy because the circuit needed sealing, arguing the job could be postponed.

STATION, WIGRAM. , SEALING AND REPAIRING PATHS AND TAXIWAYS, PLUS PLANT MIX WHERE SPECIFIED. TENDERS for the above are invited to close with the secretary, Tenders Board, Ministry of works, wellingion, at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. September 14, 1954. Plans and Specifications are available from the strut Engineer, Ministry 2395 Works, Christchurch. Drivers Now Preparing For Big Race At Wigram Plans for the Lady Wigram Trophy race and other races to be held at Wigram in February of next year are now well in hand. Many local drivers, each with a zealously guarded methed. are already putting the final touches co their cars and tuning the engines to maximum efficiency. With the likelihood of several overseas drivers entering. competition will be keen. F. Shuter, well known in New Zealand motor-racing circles, will drive the Edelbrock special formerly owned by G. C. Smith, of Auckland. The car has been practically rebuilt, and in rials has reached well over 100 miles an hour. A newcomer to the sport is A. Shadbolt, who has built his own tubular chassis car on the lines of a Cooper. It is fitted with a speedway J.A.P. engine and swinging rear axle, but has yet to be tested. A car that will attract much interest is the Stuford special, which will be driven by N. Stuart. The car has a Mercury motor and has been built to the specifications of the Californian K& plan (a method for tuning for dirt track racing). It has a special chassi: which has been lengthened for racing on bitumen circuits. Ine Stanton special, built by M. and C. Stanton, is powered by an inverted four cylinder De Havilland Gypsy Major aero engine. This car, which was built for the Ardmore race this year, has twice recorded 14.7sec for the standing 1 mile. D. Ransley has rebuilt the Riley in which he crashed at Dunedin in 1952 and has fitted it with a* 1953 supercharged 24 litre Riley. engine. An interesting device fitted to the differential of this car is a Panhard bar, which. lessens the effect of side sway and drift on corners. A modified Vanguard engine with four carburettors has been fitted to W. Darrell's A.C.E. A new tubular steel chassis has been built, and Darrell bas high hopes for the car's performance. Other drivers who are working hard on their cars include H. Green, with ¡ the rear-engined RA. B. Grigg, who. will drive a Ford 10 specian D. Drury, whose Singer (formerly H. Logan's): has a new engine block, and M. Winterbourn with supercharged| | Vauxhall. 22-11-54 Wigram Trophy Race Sir,—I fully agree with "X.K.120" in his protest to the RN.Z.A.F. over carcelling the 1955 Lady Wigram Trophy race. It seems that in spite of the prospects of international drivers and cars competing against our loca. arivers in a race of world class, the Air force 1s determined to stop this popular event through excuse after excuse, 'the North motor-racing to dritt slowly to Island. The first Wigram race in 1949 set New Zealand car-racing on its feet, and it seems disastrous that a task like sealing the circuit, which could easily be postponed for a week or two later, should stop this classic event.—EDELBBOCK.
