If, however, a car is on the Causeway at the time, it is expected there will be a hold-up of up to one minute, the time the slowest car running will take to cover the distance. This information was given this morning by the race controller (Mr H. Croft). Buses Not Affected Passengers travelling by the Christchurch Transport Board's buses to or from Sumner are not likely to be held up in any way, for the races will be of ten minutes' duration. with one of fifteen minutes, and they have been arranged so as not to interfere to any extent with the normal timetable of the buses. Motorists who wish to use the Causeway may have a wait of up to ten minutes or, in one case, of up to fifteen minutes, while the road is closed and a race is in progress. The City Council Traffic Department's officers will be working in co-operation with the Transport Department's officers, who will be using radio-equipped cars. Traffic will be held between the Heathcote! bridge and Major Hornbrook Roar on the city side of the Causeway, and on the main road at Redeliffs imner Causeway will be cleared up to one minute on Saturday ing Club will hold a series of rmacks Bay and the Causeway Race Fund on the Sumner side, while a race is in progress. Between races, the Causeway will be open to traffic, but motorists who do not wish to stop on a trip to Sumner or Lyttelton were advised this morning by the Traffic Superintendent (Mr G. P. Kellar) to make their way via St Andrews Hill Road and the Summit Road or, alternatively, by St Andrews Hill Road, the Summit Road and Moncks Spur Road. Other arrangements made are: • The only spectator area will be on the Sumner side of McCormacks Bay in the area of the Tram-i way quarries. No spectators will be allowed in the areas at the junctions of Mount Pleas ant koad and the Causeway and Beachville Road and the Cause. way. All spectators must bel in the spectator area before 2 p.m.the time when the first race will start • The car-parking area will be in the grounds of the Redelibe School, and no parking will allowed between the Heathcote bridge and the racing area, or at points within eight chains of the Causeway in Beachville Road or on the Main Road at Redclifis.- Special Transport Board buses Will take passengers from the city to the races and passengers will be dropped at the Cutting at Redcliffs. At the end of the programme the same buses will pick up passengers at the cutting and bring them back to the city. MOTOR RACES ON CAUSEWAY CLUB EVENT FOR AIR RACE FUNDS The Motor Racing Club of Christchurch will hold a series of short races on a new, interesting circuits of about two miles at McCormack's Bay tomorrow. The meeting has been organised by the club without any outside help and, as the entire proceeds will be given to the International Air Race funds, it will probably be well supported. The races will start at the Sumner end of the old McCormack's Bay road where the old tram line used to cross the road. One of the best places from which to view the races will be the rocky hillside overlooking the start. Cars will travel a short distance before they take a sharp left-hand turn on to the Causeway, which is about threequarters of a mile long. There another sharp left turn at the end of the Causeway and then a continuous shallow left curve for more than a mile. The club hopes that as many spectators as possible will watch the races from the hill above the start, where there is room for almost unlimited numbers. From here they will be able to see the whole of the circuit! in perfect safety. As the old road is so narrow the number of entries in each race will be strictly limited, probably to seven or eight cars. There will be one race of seven or eight laps, and all the others will be of five laps each. As most cars should be able to lap at an average of 60 miles an hour or better, the Causeway will be closed for only about 10 minutes at a time. The cars will be instantly flagged off in their order if it is necessary for an ambulance or a fire engine to cross the Causeway during the running of a race. Besides more familiar Christchurch racing cars_such as H. Green's Vanguard special, F. Shuter's Ford V8 special. and H. McLean's 1100 c.c. Cooper-J.A.P., there will be three or four entirely new cars having their first trials under racing conditions. These are D. Wild's imported Grand Prix Alta. D. Haigh's rear-engined Citroen special. W. Southby's singleseater Ford V8 special. and, possibly, D. Ransley's rebuilt two-litre Riley special. Spectators will not be allowed to park their cars on the main road be-! tween the Heathcote bridge and the Redcliffs School. Parking space will be available in the school grounds.
