The Motor Racing Club's 1952 Wigram race attracts one of the best entries yet, run as two 10-car 25-mile heats and a 50-mile final for the four fastest of each, plus a 25-mile power-handicapped saloon and sports car race. Les Moore drives last year's winning 2.9 litre Alfa Romeo, his son Ronnie a Kieft with a 998cc Vincent-HRD engine, Hec McLean and J. Stafford of Wellington Coopers, George Smith (Auckland) the Ford V8 special, Hec Green the rear-engined supercharged Vanguard Special, and Australian Tom Sulman the Maserati after a smash at Parramatta on 28 January.
Frank Bennett, a competitor in the 1949 race, reflects that the 1952 Wigram machines and drivers are of a much higher standard than in 1949, when many weird home-built cars appeared. He describes Hec Green's gleaming car leading into the straight on lap one before limping to the pits with a damaged wheel, and judges that big cars like the Alfa Romeo have supremacy in long open races.
