20-2-52 20-2-52 21-2-52 RACING CAR DRIVER HAS 'SPEED IN HIS BLOOD' If there is a man in New Zealand with speed in his blood, it must be the racing car driver, Mr George Smith, of Auckland. Since he established an unofficial car record from Auckland to Wellington and Picton to Bluff in 1920 at the age of 19, he has been a follower of speed. He has watched motor racing develop from its infancy, and all through the years has taken an active and successful part in the sport. The cream Gee Cee Ess Specialmaximum speed somewhere in the vieinity of 130 miles an hour-with Which Mr Smith nas,. since World war Il, established himself as one of the foremost racing drivers in the Dominion 6 in which in his youth far cry from the Chandler he drove from Auckland to Blufi in about thirty-three hours. Mr Smith is in the city preparing his car for the Lady Wigram Trophy race which will be held at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Station, wigram, on Saturday. For him it will be just another event in a big calendar. Last Saturday he secured fastest time in the South Island championship standing kilometre event in Dunedin. By the time the racing season has finished he will have raced his car for fourteen consecutive week-ends. - Last year Mr Smith won the North Island beach racing title in: his car one morning,. and the after. noon with his speedboat, he took second place in the New Zealand hydroplane championship. He is anxious to compete in both events again this year. Four Engines vIr Smith has four engines to use in his racing car or his speedboat as the occasion demands. These make it possible for him to compete in evéry event in the season, because there is always a spare engine to use if one should "blow up. Although he has now reached the "fifty mark,' " Mr Smith considers ne Mr George Smith is driving as well, if not better, than ever. He has no special physical training, routine, although admitted with a twinkle in his eye and a smile that reached well up towards the top of his bald head. as he patted a rather expansive paunch, that he had been dieting lately. If he gets a chance Mr Smith will be out in front from the start on Saturday. He hopes the day will be fine for the sake of the Motor Racing Club which is organising the race. but, once the spectators are at: the circuit he would be quite happy to see it rain, because, he says, he goes better in the rain. 100 M.
