Speeding cars thrill crowds: racing motorists introduce a new sport

A special correspondent reviews the first NZ road racing championship at Wigram and the new Association of NZ Car Clubs, formed two years earlier (chairman P. M. Hoare, vice-chairman R. Grierson of Auckland, president C. W. P. Hamilton of Fairlie). He notes the legal problem over closing roads in Waimairi County, expects law changes before a possible 1950 international Grand Prix at Canterbury, and describes the race: Proctor won in his Riley with Bennett's Invicta second and Ransley's Riley third, and only Proctor, Bennett and Mrs Lupp avoided pit stops. Green and Roycroft duelled, Green reached 109 mph and set the day's best lap average of just over 72 mph.

Lap times

  • H. Green (Wolseley Special): 109 mph top speed
  • H. Green (Wolseley Special): 72 mph fastest race lap

Facts

  • The Association of NZ Car Clubs, formed in 1947, comprised the NZ Motor Racing Drivers' Association, the Northern Sports Car Club (Auckland), NZ Sports Car Club (Wellington), Canterbury Car Club and Otago Sports Car Association.
  • The 1949 Wigram race attracted an estimated 25,000 to 30,000 spectators, and the Canterbury Car Club found catering for the public easier at the air station than on the Harewood roads.
  • Plans for 1950 included a New Zealand Grand Prix race at Canterbury, with the Association seeking Royal Automobile Club recognition.
