Wigram goodbye? Baird wins again

Craig Baird won the 1993 Lady Wigram Trophy comfortably from Paul Radisich and a bunch of scrapping Americans, equalling Jimmy Clark's three wins and trailing only Graham McRae (1971, 72, 73, 75). Forty-four years of racing at Wigram might have ended. Kayne Scott and Kieran Wills had problems in TraNZam, so Scott Lagasse won all three races, and John McEwan rode the Cardinal Britten.

Facts

  • Craig Baird's 1993 victory was his third Lady Wigram Trophy win, equalling Jim Clark; only Graham McRae (1971, 72, 73 and 75) has won more.
  • The 1993 Lady Wigram Trophy was possibly the final one at Wigram, with the race possibly moving to Ruapuna in 1994.
  • At Wigram in 1993 the dry-sump pump in the Chev engine of Kieran Wills' Mazda could not scavenge completely on the high-speed left-hand corners.

2 - 93 WIGRAM GOODBYE? Baird Wins Again * 11:7 Husqiarna ALPINE Craig Baird Forty-four years of racing at Wigram might have come to an end. The 1993 Lady Wigram Trophy race might not have been the most memorable but nevertheless contained enough drama to ensure that, should the race be moved to Ruapuna next year, the final fling at Wigram will be remembered for the win posted by a Kiwi. Craig Baird who had a com fortable win over fellow Kiwi Paul Radisich and a bunch of scrapping Americans also made his mark in the Lady Wigram Trophy records by joining one of the worlds great drivers from the 1960's, the late Jimmy Clark who won the race on three occasions. Only one other driver has won it more - Graeme McRae in 1971, 72, 73 and 75. "It is a race I have been aware of all my life," said Baird, "Everybody knows that it is something special. The drivers always look forward to Wigram because of the fast nature of the track and the history that goes with it." Opening lap at Wigram with Scoft leading Lagasse, Knifel, Wills and Dom Elvy. Lagasse went on to win all three TraNZam races at Wigram after Scoft and Wills had problems.
