Deadline for touring car decision

The final result of the 1986 NZ touring car championship, decided at the Lady Wigram meeting, was in doubt until Thursday because the induction port diameters of the new Australian-made 5-litre Holden Commodore V8s did not match the homologation papers. Officials called it a typing error, not cheating. Trevor Crowe (BMW 635CSi) said he did not want the title won other than on the track.

Facts

  • Ten Commodores were entered in the 1986 Nissan-Mobil 500 Group A international series starting with the Wellington waterfront street race.
  • The Commodores' induction port diameters differed by about 5mm from the printed homologation figures, in 1986.

It is the deadline #hich has been set by motor sport assoriation officials for er trants or drivers of the newly homologated Holden Commodore saloons to gei their acts together. MANZ officials have evidestly been amare for some time that the measurements of the diameters of the inductionports in the Slitre Australian-made V8 engines do not agree mith those printed in the homolo gation papers. Evidently a Smm variation exists between the printed measurements and the actual engine measure iment. A motorsport association ne for at Wigram said that there! #as no question, of cheating involved in the dis •crepancy, but simply a typ ing error in the homologation documentation. He said that the association had to be satisfied that the car compiled with Group A regulations before the result of the touring car title could be given • A satisfactory explanation is a matter of urgency be cause, il the Commodores. which have been contesting Group A races in New Zealand since the beginning of the month, do not comply by Thursday evening it is likely that they will be excluded from the Nissan- Mobil 500 Group A: International series. which will opes with tbe welington Waterfront Street race ca Sunday. Thel 10 Commodores.some of them to be driven by top Australian salcon-car drivers-hate bees agtered drivers in the series and presumably the majority of them will be to the latest, homologation specificaticrs. If they are excluded it will take some interest eut of the race. The Christchurch Archibald Motor Sport driver. Trevor Crose. who on points finished runner-ap to the Auckland Commodore driver, Graeme Borkett. in toe championship on Sunday, made it plain that neither he, his team, nor the sponsors of the B.M.#. 634CSi-Burrougns Linc, Burroughs, Lid and C.C.L Computers. Ltd-had any desire to win the touring car title in any orber Fay than on the racing circuits. "It soila be a shame if Borkett most Forthy winner, was deprived of the title because of a printing etror, That's how we all feel about it." said Crowe
