9-11-84 New t for Iming car race series By LINDSAY KERR In a break with tradition, New Zealand's forthcoming international motor, racing series for Formula Pacific cars will be run during the weekends in Dember. The New Zealand Motorsport Association is of the opinion that running the series in December rather than in January as previously - will attract more overseas drivers. Its view is based on the assumption that drivers who compete in the Australian Grand Prix this month will be more easily Fooed to the four-race New Zealand series which follows. Whether tois proves tue case remains to be seen as top drivers these days are demanding a lot more money than New Zealand can realistically afford to pay. Gone are the days when the Formula 1 drivers were encouraged by the likes of Denny. Hulme, Chris Amon and Bruce McLaren to come to these shores for a summer nolday and well-earned break from the rigours of the year-long season. There is no New Zealander in Formula 1 ranks now and with the car manufacturers spending more time on testing outside the season the pack- age to entice drivers here will have to be attractive. New Zealand is now somewhat in the wilderness with most overseas participation coming from drivers seeking to breat into higher racing formulas. Whether the change in dates will attract any more of these drivers is the subject of considerable debate, though early signs are encouraging. Brazilian Entries do not close until later this month but already the promoters of the Lady Wigram Trophy Race have been notified of five confirmed entries. Leading the bunch is the little Brazilian, Roberto Moreno, who made a huge impact when he was here last in 1981. After that series many thought he was heading straight for Formula 1. After having a test drive with Lotus, Moreno did not make the grade - through no fault of his own it was subsequently discovered and he was left wallowing in the British Formula 3 series. He has returned to prominence in the Northern Hemisphere season recently completed, finishing in second place to New Zealand-born Mike Thackwell in the European Formula 2 championships. 19-11-84 SUNDAY DECEMBER 2nd 1984 MEETING TROPHY SAVE DOLLARS CONCESSION TICKETS 15256 'GOOD TEAR Stra PRE RACE BOOKINGS DISCOUNTED OUTFIELD $6 Available from Cockrams Japanese Car Corner $10 235 Durham St. INFIELD Ron Rutherford Cars Marac, Marac House INFIELD 200 Yaidhurst Rd 118 Armagh St. CHILDREN S2 58 Manchester St. 126 Riccarton Rd.
