PACIFIC MOTOR RACING CHAMPIONSHIP Wha The big attraction at Sunday's Wigram meeting will undoubtedly be the Formula Pacific racing. but few people really know what this formula entails. It is the equivalent of the overseas Formula Atlantic. which specifies an engine of up to 1600 cu cm capacity. And it must be a piston engine. Fuel injection is pronibites. onl tour cylinders are permitted. an the formula the engine may only have the original number ot valves. Regulations are very stringent. and include everthing from age of fuel tanks to extinguisher sustems. Length and width are critical and the cockpit must be so designed that the maximun time for the drivers to get in and out must not exceed 5 seconds. Modifications are allowed to the engine. with certain specified exclu- means ons. Which are quite technical. The entire fuel tank must be rushable. and be based on a firesistant core Cars must be fitted with dual brake systems, and also have rearward-facing red warning lights. Although the Ford BDA motor is the most favoured for this formula. there are many other power plants that could be used. These include Mitsubishi. Alfa homeo. Fiat. Renault. BMW and Porsche. A formula Pacific car is a very strictly regulated piece of machinery. $400 000 WOr of machines Моге than $400,000 worth of reaching machinery will line up on the Wigram grid on Sunday to battle for the Aurora AFX Formula • Pacific Series. Some of the cars cost up te $600,050 now. so this formula has become beyond the scope of the drive-for-fun entrant. It is all sponsorship and doilars these davs. As managing director of the Grand Prix Association (Mr Ron Frost: says: "11 is the biggest and richesi field we have had in This may be so but the pri money would got cor the costs of an overse entrant even it he won every race. The first placegetter wis $2000: second gets $1250. and third. $750. The lowest prize of $125 goes to sixth place. There are additional perk: of champagne for the winner of the races. Wigram this year will be top-heavy with New Zraland drivers - 11 in all. but it will make the racing no less challenging. In fact. it should be particularly close.
