Not a great fuel waster

George Begg argues motor sport is no bigger a fuel waster than aimless Sunday driving or horse racing, and says the move to 2-litre Shellsport Saloons (replacing the larger-engined cars of the past) responds to fuel concerns.

Facts

  • Shellsport saloons moved to a 2-litre formula in the late 1970s partly in response to fuel economy concerns.

Photos

3-3-79 Not a great fuel waster' Metor sport is a prime target in any sort of "fuel crisis." But its participants are no more wasters of fuel than aimless Sunday drivers, in George Begg's view. "Il it's a fair criticism of motor racing, it's also a fair criticism of horse racing and a lot of other sports. "The amount of fuel actually used by competitors in moter sport is very little." Motor sport can counter the fuel-wastage criticism by switching to more economical cars, Mir Begg says. "This is precisely what prompted the move to 2-litre Shellsport Saloons, as against the f-litre cars of the past."
