Saloon racing should be most spectacular so far

Saloon racing at the January 1976 Wigram meeting should be even better than the previous year, with Jim Richards (Mustang) and Allan Moffatt (Chevrolet Monza) racing against Leo Leonard (PDL Mustang), Jack Nazer (Victor V8), Reg Cook's works Datsun Cherry and Grant Walker. Richards fitted wider wheels for Manfeild, while Moffatt spent three weeks reworking his Monza.

Facts

  • Reg Cook's Datsun Cherry was prepared by the Datsun works engineer, who travelled with it, and is fuel-injected.
  • Fast Wigram saloons were expected to reach more than 150 mph at Wigram in 1976.

Photos

  • Mighty Mustangs. Leo Leonard (top) and Jim Richards will be top contenders at Wigram.
