McLaren's widow donates new trophy for Wigram race
Drivers in the twenty-first Lady Wigram Trophy would compete for two trophies: the annual Lady Wigram Trophy and a new one donated by Mrs Patty McLaren, widow of Bruce McLaren, for the fastest lap of the race. Wigram race history is compared (McLaren won in 1963 and 1964 in a Cooper; Gethin's 1974 fastest lap), the hairpin bend was reintroduced for 1975, and Mrs McLaren talks of sponsorship problems in motor racing.
Lap times
- Jack Brabham: 97.63 mph fastest race lap
- Peter Gethin (Chevron B24): 120.566 mph fastest race lap
- Graham McRae (McLaren): 107.12 mph fastest race lap
Facts
- Bruce McLaren won the Lady Wigram Trophy race in 1963 over 150 miles (average 93.832 mph) and in 1964 over 101 miles, driving Coopers.
- The trophy donated by Mrs Patty McLaren in January 1975 goes to the driver with the fastest lap in the race; the club keeps the trophy and gives a memento.
- The 1974 trophy race was won at 114.277 mph by John McCormack; Peter Gethin set the then record lap at 120.566 mph.
- In 1971, the last time the hairpin was part of the circuit, Graham McRae won at 104.93 mph; a fast left-hand curve replaced the hairpin from 1972 and the hairpin was reintroduced in 1975.
- Practice qualifying trials for the 1975 Lady Wigram Trophy were held the day before the race (Saturday 18 January).
