McRae wins, takes lead in Tasman series

Driving a smooth, polished race, Graham McRae led the 1971 Lady Wigram Trophy almost from end to end in his Chevrolet-engined McLaren M10B, breaking the race-time record (101.2 miles in 57min 51.8sec) and setting a race lap record of 1:17.3 (107.12 mph). Frank Matich finished 27.2sec behind, with Graeme Lawrence third for the first time in eight attempts. Cannon and Eyerly were eliminated early and Allen retired with magneto trouble, putting McRae at the head of the Tasman points.
