Lady Wigram likely to be vital in series

The 1971 Lady Wigram Trophy looked likely to decide the seven-race Tasman championship, with Niel Allen (15 points) and Graham McRae (13) leading Frank Matich (6) and Amon and Eyerly (4 each). Frank Gardner and Kevin Bartlett were yet to score. McRae's 103.76 mph Wigram lap record from the previous year's preliminary event was expected to fall in qualifying.

Lap times

  • Graham McRae: 103.76 mph lap record

Facts

  • Before the 1971 Lady Wigram Trophy Tasman points stood: Allen 15, McRae 13, Matich 6, Amon 4, Eyerly 4.
  • The 1971 Tasman series had seven races, with only one New Zealand race (Teretonga) after Wigram.
  • Graham McRae's Wigram lap record of 103.76 mph was set in the preliminary event of the 1970 meeting and was expected to be broken in 1971 qualifying, though the official figure stays until beaten on race day.
  • Qualifying trials for the rolling-start grid were scheduled for the Friday before the 1971 race.

  • Frank Matich, on his way to second place at Pukekohe last week, will be a strong contender at Wigram.
  • American Formula A champion John Cannon is now a member of the STP team and is likely to be well up among the leaders at Wigram.

Tyre development

Technical feature on racing tyre design: diameter, tread width, profile and aspect ratio (as low as 33 per cent against 70-80 per cent on road tyres), low cord angles, thin casings and compound choice, which can make five seconds a lap difference on a 1.5-minute circuit.

Facts

  • In 1971 racing tyre compound choice could make as much as five seconds a lap difference on a circuit with a lap time of about 1.5 minutes.

Tyre In world motor-racing today, competition between tyre manufacturers is so close that fortunes can easily change several times in a season. • A company obviously "on top" and providing the most suitable tyres at one race, may well find itself left behind by its rivals at the next meeting. The development of racing tyres is a continuous process. Efforts are chiefly concentrated on two aspects of development-design and compounding. The first step in the design of a racing tyre is to establish diameter and tread width, then the profile. Be fore a tyre goes into production it is studied throughout the speed range to determine its exact profile at maximum speed. The shape of a tyre may change considerably as the speed at which it is turning increases from rest to 200 m.p.h. Another important consideration is the aspect ratio of the tyre-the height • of the casing, from its bead to Develop its shoulder, in relation to! the tread width. Many racing tyres now have an aspect ratio as low as 33 per cent; this compares with a ratio of between 70 and 80 per cent on most radial passenger car tyres. The casing material used for racing purposes is very similar to that used for highperformance road tyres, except that the cord angles are extremely low to enhance stability at high speed. Higher angles are used-on road tyres to improve both ride and resistance to puncturing. The casing is also thinner than on road tyres to minimise heat build-up. The main considerations which affect the choice of the compound are heat resistance, traction, teat resistance and wear. Tyre compounds contain about 15 ingredients and the choice of tread rubber can make a difference of as much. as five seconds a lap од 2 circuit with a lap time of, about 1.5 minutes. ment Lady Wigram likely to be vital in series By PETER GREENSLADE The Lady Wigram Trophy race on Saturday already shows every sign of being the vital one in this year's seven-race Australia- New Zealand Tasman championship.
