Race never so open

Preview of the 1969 Lady Wigram Trophy, said to be the most open ever with five men holding a good chance: Graham Hill, Chris Amon, Jochen Rindt, Piers Courage and Frank Gardner. It reviews the visiting drivers and likely leading New Zealanders (Graeme Lawrence, Roly Levis, Laurence Brownlie), the adjustable wings on the Lotus cars, the varied Tasman 2.5-litre machinery, and the Tasman championship points.

Facts

  • In the 1968 Lady Wigram Trophy, winner Jim Clark took 59min 10.8sec to cover 44 laps; the last finisher completed 25 laps.
  • The Lotus wing in 1969 was adjustable, controlled by a driver pedal left of the clutch, flattening on straights and angling on corners.
  • Tasman championship points: 9 for first, 6 second, 4 third, 3 fourth, 2 fifth, 1 sixth; Amon led with 18, Courage 10, Rindt 6, Geoghegan 5, Gardner 4, Bell and Lawrence 3, McRae 1 before Wigram 1969.
  • The 1969 Motor Racing Club championship race at Wigram counted towards the South Island championship for New Zealand-built single-seaters, sponsored by Guthrey's Freightways Ltd.
  • Graham McRae built his own chassis and suspension for his 1500cc McRae-Ford, using a Brabham 1.5 engine and gearbox.
  • After Wigram, one Tasman race remained in New Zealand, at Teretonga, then three in Australia.

Photos

  • New Zealand's Chris Amon taking his V6 2500cc Ferrari to victory in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe earlier this month.
  • The English driver Piers Courage at speed during the Grand Prix at Pukekohe earlier this month; his Brabham Ford V8 is said to be more powerful than the Ferraris and lighter than the Lotus cars.
