He was attended to by St
John Ambulance men,
subsequently admitted to hos
pital for a routine check. He
was not seriously injured.
Eliminated
It may have been in this
incident that New Zealand's
leading 1.5-litre driver,
Graeme Lawrence, was also
eliminated from the race. He
spun to the in-field in his Brabham Ford and was unable to
resume.
The smaller 1.6 litre cars of
Hulme and Courage were no
match for the Tasman Formula machines of Clark and
Amon, but these two provided
an exciting race within a race,
and some measure of their
skill and the power of thesel
smaller cars was to be seen in
the fact that Hulme put in a
lap at 102.48 miles an hour and
Courage managed one at 100.35
miles an hour.
All Clark
But as far as the race was
concerned it was Clark from
"go" to "whoa." He snatched
the lead from the start and
held it very narrowly from
Amon through to the middie
stages of the race, and then
managed to draw away in the
late stages.
Hulme made a good start
Points
for
Clark
and so did Courage, and these
two ran through the race in
third and fourth places, Courage being particularly impressive in that he managed to
keep the world champion in
his sights the whole way.
Gardner made a poor start,
but worked his way up into
fifth place behind Courage before retiring in lap seven.
Rodriguez
was next in iner followed ey
Mclaren and then there was
a fair gap back to Palmer, who
drove out the race very much
on his own and comfortably
clear of Levis, Dawson and
Stone, who kept together for
almost the entire distance.
Clark and Amon were lapping the tail-enders after they
covered about 15 miles.
FROM PAGE I
and this process of lapping
slower cars continued with
monotonous regularity. Howlever, the slower men gave the
leaders plenty of room to work
in and despite the big speed
differential, there was no incidents.
Rodriquez looked as though
he might be out of the ruming
when he was forced to make a
pit stop in lap 19. A sticking
throttle slide was the trouble
but the BRM mechanics had
the diminutive Mexican on his
way almost before he had
'stopped.
However. the delay was
enough to let McLaren up into
the fifth place which he held
comfortably to the end of the
race.

Colours
Lady Wigram Trophy Race
winner Jim Clark will be
racing in the colours of red,
white and gold in Australia,
and entered with an international permit by Gold Leaf
Team Lotus.
Relaxing in a caravan aiter
his record-breaking _race win
Clark said that following the
$160,000 tie-up between Team
Lotus and John Player, the
British tobacco manwacturing
concern, an international permit had been taken up under
the name of Gold Leaf Team
Lotus.
If he raced in Australia Gold
Leaf Team Lotus would be on
the car. It would be painted in!
the colours of the tobacco company.
The insignia of the company
features on the Lady Wigramwinning Lotus Ford, V&, and
includes a portrait of a sailor
smoking a pipe.
Said Clark: "I don't know,
we might nave to take that
little man out, but if we are
racing in Australia we will certainly be racing with the Gold
Leaf Team Lotus label on the
cars."
Other advertisers featured
on the Lotus include a tyre
manufacturer, an oil company,
and an American oil additive
organisation. .
*As far as they are con-
and apart from those already
mentioned others who struck
trouble included the young
Aucklander David Oxton, who
was well up with the 1.5 litre
cars when he had to abandon
the race in lap 10 with a damaged head gasket in his Brabham Ford
Don Macdonald dropped out
of the running in the twentythird lap with a slipping
clutch in his Brabham Ford
Four laps earlier Brian Faloon had departed the scene for
reasons which even he could
not determine, but the : cause
was probably lack of oil preshis 2.5 Brabham
Climax. Earlier in the race:
he had made a stop to replace
a burst water-hose.
Perhaps the most ignominious fate of all was suffered
by Ken Smith whose Lotusi
Ford ran out of petrol afteri
36 laps.
Conditions could not
been better for racing at Wigram today. The sun shone, so shere,
but moderate
wind not only helped to keep
temperatures reasonable, but
also helped speed competitors
on their way down the long
back straight.
The president of the Motor
Racing Club (Mr J. A. Brewer)
estimated that the crowd was
the largest to attend a Wigram meeting for five or six
and said he thought
there would have been at least
30,000 spectators.

Lloyd May of Manurewa took
the main honours in the open
25-mile motor-cycle race at
Wigram to-day with his 500 c.c.

After passing Sonny Clarke
on the second lap, May had a
good battle with Brian Scobie,
also on a Norton, before winning by 100 yards.
After a tight battle, B. Adams
(Norton) beat D. Mortimer
