Winner hard to predict

Preview of the 1968 Lady Wigram Trophy warning that the New Zealand Grand Prix result is a poor guide: only Bruce McLaren (in 1964) has won both races since the 2.5-litre Tasman Formula began. Chris Amon won the 1968 Grand Prix in a Ferrari Dino V6, Frank Gardner was second in the Mildren Brabham-Alfa Romeo V8 and Piers Courage third in a McLaren-Ford; Jim Clark's Lotus 49 dropped a valve. Denis Hulme, recovered from a 140 mph barrel-roll crash, had a new Brabham FVA for Wigram, where 100 mph laps were almost certain.

Facts

  • Bruce McLaren in 1964 was the only driver to win the New Zealand Grand Prix and Lady Wigram Trophy double since the 2.5-litre Tasman Formula began.
  • The Ferrari Dino V6 for Chris Amon was built at Ferrari's Modena factory and assembled in New Zealand at Woodville by mechanic Bruce Wilson.
  • Amon's 1968 NZ Grand Prix win earned $400 first prize plus starting money.
  • The Motor Racing Club planned to eliminate slow drivers in the 1968 Lady Wigram qualifying trials.
  • Denis Hulme crashed in a 140 mph barrel roll at Pukekohe in the 1968 Grand Prix before recovering for Wigram.
