FAVOUR CAR RACING
The a de We atten Yance For ce to-dent, buried the earmaces it be a record attendance for the event. During the early races it
seemed both the weather and the crowd would make the Motor Racing
Club's annual race a big success.
"A potential record crowd
for a Lady Wigram event,"
said Mr G. F. Sheppard, secretar yof the meeting, this
morning
"Conditions-fine and sunny,
with a stiff easterly wind-are
excellent; there are class competitors, and a large crowdthis meeting promises to be
one of the best yet."
Cars were four or five deep
along the back straight and the
hairpin bend half an hour before the start of the meeting.
Cars were more than a dozen
deep in the main car park opposite the front straight.
Untroubled
Napier's Dick Langley, driving a 1293 c.c. Austin-Cooper S,
had little trouble winning the
thirty-minute production saloon
car race.
Langley led the thirteen
starters from start , to finish
covering the 2.3 mile circuit
seventeen times before the
time limit had elapsed.
Bryan Innes at the wheel of
the Morris-Cooper took
second place with as little
trouble.
The next four placings
were hotly contested, nowever.
After one lap Hugh Kettel-.
well (Auckland), in a Morris-
Cooper S was lying birth. But
over the next three laps he
showed some excellent driving
and slipped into third place.
Hugh Bagwell (Havelock
North), driving yet another
Austin Cooper_S, stayed with
Kettelwell and for the remainder of the race these two
drivers had an interesting
tussle. Kettelwell eventually
took the honours.
Christchurch driver Carlos
Neate (Prince G.T.) and Barry
Phillips (Lotus Cortina) also
kept close company throughout
the race, with Phillips having
a : Slight edge to take fifth
place.

A good duel developed between David Oxton in a 1500
c.c. Lola Ford and John Riley,
¡driving a 2500 c.c. Lotus Climax.
Oxton held a slender lead!
for quite a time but in the!
end had to give best to Riley's
more powerful car- and the
latter came third, with Oxton
a good fourth.
