Wigram event now one of considerable consequence: Message from the President

Motor Racing Club president J. A. Brewer welcomes drivers and fans to the thirteenth international Lady Wigram Trophy meeting, the second round of the 1967 Tasman Championship. He recounts the Tasman Formula's history (2.5-litre, unsupercharged, single-seaters; Bruce McLaren champion 1964, Jim Clark 1965, Jackie Stewart 1966), praises the large overseas entry and appeals to spectators to respect out-of-bounds areas at the working RNZAF airfield.

Facts

  • The Tasman Championship was introduced in 1964 so that drivers from both hemispheres were matched more evenly; the formula demanded open-wheeled single-seaters of up to 2.5 litres, superchargers banned and fuel limited to 130 octane.
  • Points after the first Tasman round, the 1967 New Zealand Grand Prix: Stewart 9, Clark 6, Attwood 4, Palmer 3, Lawrence 2, Hollier 1.
  • Jackie Stewart set new race and lap records winning the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy.
  • The Motor Racing Club was founded solely to stage an annual international meeting in Christchurch, with all work done by club members and volunteer helpers including the Commanding Officer of RNZAF Station Wigram.
