B.R.M.
Duo Had It
All to
Themselves
Last year, Clark, who won the race, shared a lap record with Bruce
McLaren, who finished secondl. in a 2.5 Cooper-Climax, with a lime of
1min 25.Osec--96.39 miles an hour. With so much of the interest gone
from the race, the_crowd focused its attention upon Martin in his red
Brabham and Palmer in his green Lotus.
In a way, this duel was 1967 Wigram race bistory repeating itself.
Last year, Palmer hustled with the other Australian, Gardner. and
finally got the better of him. About two-thirds of the way through the
race this year, aller seldom boing more than a couple of hundred vards
behind Martın, Palmer look over third spot in the twenty-seventh lap
when the Australian had a spin. Martin resumed smartly. but had no
chance of making up the lost ground.
Further back in the field. another tense struggle developed between
Buchanan and Marwood. Buchanan came out on top and managed to
hold off Marwood fairly comfortably, although the engine of his Brabham sounded very sick indeed.
The current national 1i-litre champion, Levis, went most of the
way fairly much on his own in his Brabham-Ford. The fast Wigram
circuit, however, proved too much for the smaller-enginer car. which
just couldn't foot it with the bigger machines.
A lap behind him came Denis Varwood (2.5 Cooper-Climax), and
he was followed home by the first of the 1.5-litre car drivers. Roly Levis
(Brabham-Ford), in seventh place.
