Excellent racing forecast

Preview of the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy, expected to be a close tussle between world champion Jim Clark (Lotus-Climax 2.5) and Jackie Stewart (BRM 2-litre). BRM sent three cars, five engines and three works mechanics; the 1,5-litre V8 bored out gives about 260 bhp at 8000 rpm against about 242 bhp at 6500 rpm for Clark's four-cylinder Climax. Heat line-ups, forecast winners and entry lists for production saloons, sports cars and all-comers saloons are given; Martin's V12 250LM Ferrari (about 320 bhp at 7500 rpm) was almost certain to win the sports car race.

Facts

  • BRM sent three cars (one a spare), five engines and three works mechanics to NZ for the 1966 Tasman series; the car won at Pukekohe and Levin.
  • The BRM 2-litre engine produced about 260 bhp at 8000 rpm with power delivered between 7000 and 10,000 rpm, requiring a six-speed gearbox; Clark's Coventry Climax produced about 242 bhp at 6500 rpm.
  • The 250LM Ferrari entered by Scuderia Veloce had a 3285cc V12 engine at the rear giving about 320 bhp at 7500 rpm, with a five-speed gearbox, an alloy Pininfarina body and a top speed of 120-185 mph depending on gearing.
  • Heat 1 of the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy was to include Clark, Attwood, Martin, Buchanan, Lawrence, Riley, Caldwell, Gillum and Dawson; heat 2 Stewart, Gardner, Marwood, Hollier, Sager, Levis, Palmer, Rhodes and Whittaker.
  • Ivy Stephenson, the only woman driver, planned to drive a Lola Climax at Wigram in 1966.

Photos

  • The number one BRM team car with Graham Hill at the wheel takes the flag at the end of the New Zealand Grand Prix at Pukekohe. The GP was a one-two win for the BRMs; on Saturday Clark, Gardner and Spencer Martin will be out to avenge the defeat.
