Can Clark complete Wigram 'double'?

Technical preview of the 1966 Lady Wigram Trophy following the Grand Prix start-line debacle in which Clark stripped first gear and Gardner was eliminated in a collision. It compares the Coventry Climax 2.5 litre four-cylinder FPF engine (about 225 bhp) with the 1,930cc V8 BRM (about 260 bhp, needing 10,500 rpm), and weighs the tyre choice (Clark on Firestone, BRMs on Dunlop) and the weather. Clark was rated the most likely winner, with Stewart closest.

Facts

  • The 1966 NZ Grand Prix at Pukekohe was cut from more than 100 miles to about 84 miles by the organisers.
  • The Lady Wigram Trophy was the only 100-mile international race on the 1966 NZ calendar.
  • The 1966 BRM V8 engine had a capacity of 1,930cc and produced about 260 bhp, versus about 225 bhp for the 2.5 litre Coventry Climax; BRM drivers had to keep it at about 10,500 rpm using six-speed gearboxes.
  • Clark won the 1965 Tasman Championship scoring nine points for the Wigram win; he raced once at Wigram in 1961 without success.
  • Clark's Lotus had centre-lock wheels that could be changed quickly.
