Costly cars racing at terrific speeds

Feature on the history of the Lady Wigram Trophy ahead of the tenth race on 18 January 1964, with a table of every winner and fastest lap since 1949. Lap speeds rose until practice in 1963 saw cars lapping the 2.116-mile circuit at just under 100 mph; Brabham holds the lap record at 97.63 mph. The circuit was lengthened to 2.3 miles for 1964 with a loop beyond Control Tower Bend, and Manchester Car Sales offered 200 pounds to the first driver to lap at 100 mph in a race.

Facts

  • Lap record at Wigram before the 1964 meeting: 97.63 mph (1:18.3), set by Jack Brabham in 1963.
  • For the 1964 meeting the circuit was lengthened to 2.3 miles by adding a loop beyond the Control Tower Bend, so lap speeds were expected to be slightly slower.
  • Manchester Car Sales Ltd offered a 200 pound prize for the first driver to lap Wigram at 100 mph in a race (1964).
  • In 1954 a slow sharp bend at the end of the back straight was removed, making one lap 2.073 miles instead of 2.116; the 1955 meeting was not held because of aerodrome sealing.
  • In 1949 most Lady Wigram Trophy cars were production sports cars or home-built specials; by 1964 the race attracted costly, specially built factory racing cars.
  • Previous winners include Peter Whitehead (Ferrari) in 1954, 1956 and 1957, Jack Brabham in 1960 and 1961, and Stirling Moss in 1962.

A message from the President

Motor Racing Club president J. A. Brewer previews the tenth Lady Wigram Trophy: Bruce McLaren, Denis Hulme and Chris Amon lead the New Zealanders, Jack Brabham and Tasmanian John Youl come from Australia, and American Tim Mayer makes his first appearance. The circuit has been lengthened with a loop, and the Trophy race cut from 150 to 100 miles to allow a fuller programme. He thanks RNZAF Station Wigram and the volunteers.

Facts

  • The 1964 Lady Wigram Trophy was cut from 150 to 100 miles to make racing closer and allow a more comprehensive programme.
  • The Wigram circuit was lengthened slightly for 1964 by the inclusion of a loop.
