Brabham, Tho had clapped on the pace, had his right rear tyre completely worn out. It is doubtful if he could have gone another two laps. There was by means a record crowd at Wigram, but it was a good one all the same, everyone got full value for their money. Never before has a trophy race been so closely contested. Surtees led for the first lap, then Melaren tOoK over and he stayed in front until lap 32, where Brabham took him. The Australian remained in front until the 42nd lap, when Mclaren went to the front again. On lap 44, Brabham made his pit stop to take on oil and that was that. He could not hope to make up the lost ground, but in those late stages, he put in a terrific effort to overhaul Maggs and Hyslop, who had Deen running second and third respectively behind McLaren.
