Millimetre margin for Moss

Peter Greenslade argues that Moss's 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy win was by the narrowest possible margin, a matter of one millimetre. He explains how Moss gambled on fast-wearing high-hysteresis rain tyres so that he could stay ahead of Brabham and Surtees at first, then nursed them to the finish, with Surtees pitting for advice and Brabham spun on oil. Greenslade also discusses the Dunedin Festival road race and the Warwick Farm meeting.

Facts

  • Moss used fast-wearing high-hysteresis tyres in the 1962 Lady Wigram Trophy and won on the narrowest of margins in the opinion of Peter Greenslade.
  • A Dunedin Festival road race was to be held on a 1.68-mile street circuit the following Saturday, with Mansel, Hoare and Shelly expected to be prominent; Angus Hyslop was a notable absentee.
  • Teretonga Park, Invercargill, was the previous round of New Zealand's international season.

Elimination of McLaren a bitter pill

McLaren's Mini-Cooper was eliminated from the first saloon race at the Lady Wigram meeting after a protest by another Mini-Cooper driver was upheld; Ron Flockhart withdrew in sympathy. The article questions the vagueness of the saloon car regulations and suggests many 'stock' saloons are heavily modified, urging the Association of New Zealand Car Clubs to clarify rules.
