newsBrabham's car on ship in stream: time running out
Jack Brabham's 2.5-litre Cooper-Climax was still on the Waikare in Lyttelton Harbour two days before the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy, so his mechanics had little time to rebuild it. Scrutineering by the Motor Racing Club was being completed, practice was on Friday afternoon, and time trials would set the grid and cut the field to 24. Ian Burgess and David Piper were preparing their cars in city garages.
Facts
- Time trials at Friday's practice for the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy would decide grid positions and reduce the field to a maximum of 24 cars.
- Brabham finished the 1960 NZ Grand Prix with his engine almost white hot from lack of water.
newsSid Jensen Lady Wigram race entrant
North Island Cooper-Climax driver Sid Jensen was a late entry for the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy, using the 1960cc engine from Denis Hulme's Cooper, since Hulme withdrew because his car had to be shipped to England. Ted Gray's Tornado was scratched after the Ardmore breakdown, and R. H. Smith's Super Squalo Ferrari was also withdrawn.
Facts
- Ted Gray's Tornado, holder of the Australian land speed record, was scratched from the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy.
featureHome-built specials still find favour
Locally built specials remain popular at Wigram, led by the new Stanton Corvette of Charles and Maurice Stanton and Hector Green's R.A. special, whose engine Green built himself. Neil Stuart has a bigger Mercury V8, Ron Rutherford a Zephyr with a Raymond Mays conversion, and most specials race in the Motor Racing Club's 42-mile championship with classes to 1500cc, 1500 to 3000cc and over 3000cc.
Facts
- The Motor Racing Club's 1960 championship event was 42 miles, in three classes: up to 1500cc, 1500 to 3000cc, and over 3000cc.
- The Stanton brothers held the Australian and New Zealand speed record at 173 mph in 1960.

Other Scratchings
There are other scratchings.
The most important is that of
the Tornado, which was to have
been driven by the Australian,
Ted Gray.
The Tornado, the Australian
land speed record-holder, was unimpressive in the New Zealand
Grand Prix at Ardmore and
went out with motor trouble in
the early stages of the race. Ap-
, parently the damage was more
extensive than first thought.
Also scratched is the Super
Squalo Ferrari which did not
perform well at Ardmore. It
was to have been driven by R.
H. Smith, of Waitakaruru.
