Rush to complete Stanton Corvette for trophy race

Charles and Maurice Stanton of Parlane Street, Christchurch, were rushing to finish their Stanton Corvette for Maurice to drive in the Lady Wigram Trophy. The engine had been run for the second time, and a coachbuilder was making the body panels for fitting on Friday night. Bruce McLaren arrived in the city with his fiancee Patricia Broad of Timaru and George Lawton withdrew from the race.

Facts

  • Lawton and Hulme were to leave for England in early February 1960 to race in Europe.
  • The Stanton Corvette was built by Charles and Maurice Stanton and was being finished days before the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy.

Even though the Stanton brothers have been working on the car for many months, there is going to be a last-minute rush to get it to the starting line on Saturday. BRUCE MCLARENS » sit otra entered in the Lady Wigram race by the Cooper Car Company, stauds un the wharf at Lyttelton this morning after heing unloaded from the Taikari city coach-bullding firm began work on the body panels this morning, and has undertaken to have them ready for fitting on Friday night. Then the car will have to be painted. Drivers Arrive Although the Stantons are not expecting great things from the new car in the tough field of overseas and New Zealand drivers, they are confident that the car will be ready in time to appear. In the meantime the drivers and cars are beginning to reach the city. Bruce Mclaren, the New Zealand Cooper Car Company driver, was in the city at the week-end with his fiancee, Miss Patricia Broad, of Timaru, and they have gone on to Timaru to spend a few days with Mclaren's sister before the race. The Englishman, Ian Burgess, and his wife will arrive in the city with his 2.2-litre Cooper tomorrow, and it is expected that the world champion, Jack Brabham, who made a brief visit back to Australia after winning the New Zealand Grand Prix at Auckland, will fiy from Australia to Christchurch on Wednesday. Lawton Out The worst news to date is that 20-vear-old George Lawton, the promising, Whangarei driver, who, with Denis Huime, of Te Puke. has been selected to race in Europe this season, has had to withdraw from the trophy race. Lawton and Hulme will leave for England early in February. Lawton notified the Motor Rac ing Club this morning that he would be unable to start at Wigram. The club has had no word from Hulme and at present assumes that he will he able to bring his 1960c.e. Cooper-Climax to Wigram.
