McLaren predicts sizzling pace for Wigram Trophy

Bruce McLaren forecast that he and Jack Brabham would lap Wigram at close to 97 mph in the 1960 Lady Wigram Trophy, about 4 mph faster than Ron Flockhart's BRM lap of the year before. He expected the works Coopers to reach 160 mph on the back straight and said the two team-mates would both try to win.

Lap times

  • Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax): 97 mph other
  • Bruce McLaren (Cooper-Climax): 160 mph top speed

  • McLaren expected the works Coopers to be about 2.5 seconds a lap faster than the 1959 BRM at Wigram, plus a further second from improved tyres.
  • Brabham and McLaren were to have completely new Coopers with new chassis and bodies for the 1960 Monaco Grand Prix.
  • McLaren hoped to race his own Cooper in Formula II in Europe in 1960.

This is the forecast McLaren made in the city this morning. MeLaren, who arrived in Christchurch yesterday fresh from his second place in the New Zealand Grand Prix at Ardmore last Saturday, beneves that the factory entered Cooper- Climaxes he and Brabham will be driving in the trophy race are at least sec a lap faster than the B.R.M. "I believe that our cars with their power output will be 2% sec a lap quicker than the B.R.M. and the improved tyres we will be using will trim off another Itsec. 160 m.p.h. For the Monaco race he and Brabham will have completely new cars with newly designed chassis and bodies of a different shape. "We will need new cars to hold off the Italian Ferraris this season," he explained. Although he and Brabham have tried out the new rearengined B.R.M., they both intend to stick to Coopers. McLaren, like many other top drivers, is not very keen sports car racing which he feels is dangerous. He hopes to be able to race his own Cooper in Formula II events during the European season and would like, if possible to have a New Zealand mechanic to look after his car. McLaren believes that the works Coopers will reach 160 miles an hour on the half-mile back straight. This means that they will be entering it througn the sweeping left-hand bend about 100 miles an hour. This means that the works Coopers are going to be overwhelmingly superior to ally other car at Wigram, Will the and it poses the big question: Cooper Car Company's two works drivers really fight it out, both driving to win, or will they sort it out before the race starts? Chubby-faced McLaren's grin broadened when the question was put to him. "We will both be trying to Blow Up? When it was suggested that they might drive each other into the ground in a wheel-to-wheel duel and possibly blow up their cars. McLaren inferred that it really would not matter a great deal as it was the last race of their New Zealand season. If he can get in Brabham's slipstream McLaren thinks he should be able to get ahead of the Australian-born champion on the straight and that Brabham will adopt the same tactics. One deep regret McLaren has about his New Zealand visit this time is that he will not be able to race at Dunedin, Invercargill and Waimate. This is because he and Brabham have to race in the first event of the 1960 worid championship series in the Argentine. McLaren will leave New Zealand about January so, and arter the Argentine race wil returr to England and compete at a number of minor meetings fore the Monaco Grand Prix.
