Wigram scratchings: N.Z. car racing status

Peter Greenslade argues New Zealand had arrived in international racing: the Scuderia Buell Piccolo Maseratis and Bonnier's 250F Maserati were going back to Modena after their Ardmore failure, and Glass's Dino Super Squalo could not beat local 1500cc Coopers. He sees the 1959 Lady Wigram Trophy as the toughest field yet, with Flockhart and Brabham facing Bruce McLaren, Ross Jensen (El Salvador Maserati), Tom Clark, Ron Roycroft, Pat Hoare (3-litre Ferrari), Syd Jensen and Bob Gibbons (Lycoming Special). No New Zealander had won the race since it became international.

Facts

  • Since the Lady Wigram Trophy became an international event in 1954, no New Zealander had won it as of January 1959.
  • Syd Jensen finished seventh in the 1959 NZ Grand Prix at Ardmore in a 1500cc Cooper-Climax.

Additional Grand Prix awards

Peter Greenslade's tongue-in-cheek awards after the January 1959 NZ Grand Prix at Ardmore: sportsmanship to Jack Brabham, who lent Moss a half-shaft; common sense to Bruce McLaren; foresight to Ross Jensen for fitting harder brake linings; technical ability to Ralph Watson, whose Lycoming Special Bob Gibbons brought home; brilliance to Syd Jensen; determination to Ron Flockhart; artistry to Stirling Moss; and a wooden spoon to the Buell and Bonnier Maseratis.

Facts

  • At the 1959 NZ Grand Prix Jack Brabham lent Stirling Moss a half-shaft, which cost Brabham the race.
