Southbridge venue again wanted: extra fixture possible

Motor Racing Club officials J. A. Brewer and I. Dalkee presented the balance sheet of the June 1957 Southbridge races to the Ellesmere County Council and Southbridge Town Council, showing a loss but with confidence of profit in future. The club would give £100 to each council plus £50 for the Southbridge fire station and sought a late March or early April date. The Canterbury Car Club could use the course, probably on 7 December, after losing its Mairehau road course.

A. Daikee, of the Motor Racing Club, yesterday paid calls on the Ellesmere County Council and the Southbridge Towa Council. The balance-sheet showed a loss on this initial venture but they expressed satisfaction with the day and confidence that, resulting from its lessons, future occasions would show a profit. They advised the County Council that at night they would be meeting the Southbridge Council and the farmers affected. They hoped to get the use of the course again but on a more suitable date, and they sought the farmers' opinions as to the most convenient time to them. Despite the loss shown on the balance-sheet, the club had decided to make a donation of £100 to the bodies concerned, in addition to the £50 promised for the Southbridge fire station. It was hoped the women's committee would somehow share in the £100. Of the six affected farmers only three were able to attend the meet- ing at Southbridge,. they being Messrs K. D. Hampton, A. Although there had been a loss on the initial venture, they expressed satisfaction with the day's racing, and in particular with the course, and confidence that future casions would show a profit. In spite of the loss the club had decided to give £100 each to the council and the Southbridge Town Council, and £50 promised for the Soutbridge fire station. Later, when the deputation conferred with the Southbridge Town Council and several farmers holaing land along the course chosen the racing, late March or early April was suggested as the most suitable time for the racing, from the farmers point of view. The two councils agreed, subject to the interests of property- 'owners being adequately safeguarded, to the Canterbury Car Club holding race over the same course, probably on December 7. The club had met with difficulty in securing a course.
