CAR RACES AT
RANGIORA
PERMISSION SOUGHT
FROM COUNCIL
A proposal that permission be given
for car races to be held in the town
was put before the Rangiora Borough
Council monthly meeting
by a deputation from the Rangiora Boy Scouts' Asscciation. whose
funds were to benefit from the races.
and . the Christchurch Motor Racing
Club, which would control the events.
The council decided to make a decision at a later meeting.
Crs. A. E. Whitehouse and W. L.
Cate supported the proposal.
Cr. C. F. Ayers said there might
easily be sick persons along the route,
who could be affected by the screeching of the cars' brakes. The proper
place for races, he said, was in the
country where less danger was involved and where quite good roads
were available for the purpose.
The route, which would traverse
Victoria, Percival and Alfred streets,
was in a built-up area, said Cr. L. R
King. In his opinion it would be
quite wrong to allow racing in the
borough.
If he thought the suggested circuit
was a good one he would support the
proposal, said Cr. C. Lundy, but be
considered it was quite unsuitable,
specially from the spectators' point of
view.
The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) said
he wanted to know who would be
liable in the event of somer me being
killed if the council gave permission
for the races.
1. N1. D. Caincart to hold the matter It was decided on the monon of li.

its responsibility in the event of an
accident.
Rangiora Council
Defer Decision
On Car Races
A decision on a request by
the Christchurch Motor Racing
Club, for permission to hold a
series of car races over Rangiora streets on November 19 for
benefit of the local Boy
Scouts' Association, was • deferred by the Rangiora Borough
Council last night.
The leader of a deputation,
Mr P. J Mckie, said the club
was willing : to help the scouts
to raise funds by holding races
on Saturday afternoon.
• Four races were proposed and
a suitable course would be over
Pervival, Alfred, and Victoria
Streets.
One hundred marshals would
control spectators who would not
be allowed on the footpaths.
Residents on the route had been
canvassed and sixty-three were
in favour of the meeting being
held.
Safety Precautions
A spokesman for the club outlined the safety precautions
which would be taken and said
he was convinced that the proposed course would be very
safe.
public risk indemnity
policy would be taken out to
cover accidents.
Councillor W. I. Cate moved
that permission to use the
streets be given, provided adequate insurance was arranged. in
But after a discussion,
which several councillors questioned the advisibility of racing
in a built-up area and the suitability of the course to accommodate a large number of spectators, the motion was withdrawn in favour of an amendment by Councillor J. D. Cathcart that the decision be deferred
until the next meeting and the
council's liability in the event
of an accident be ascertained.

Le loads and streets were not wide
enough for cars to race on and that
there was no safe accommodation for
the numerous spectators that the

be used, but after hcaring the precaltions taken and supervision, he was in
favour the application being

the race. The scouts are taking on a

Councillor W. L. Cate suported the
application and moved that permission
to use the streets be given provided
adequate insurance and a bond for

Councillor C. S. Ayers said he was
not in favour of the application being

It should be held out in the country.

Rangiora=
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—On behalf of the Motor
Racing Club and Scout Troop •1
thank you for your report of
deputation - to Rangiora Borough
Council, asking for permission to use
certain streets for a proposed Car
Race in the Borough. You covered
the deputation speakers and the
Mayor and Councillors discussions
very fully. One correction that must
be made is that 63 residents were in
favour, two were away, and only one
against. Eight businessmen apgroached were all in favour and six
offered their land for spectators. The
four Churches were the first ap
proached and were all willing to
work in with our marshals and race
times, none of them were against the
proposed race.-Yours etc.,
P. J. K. McKIE, .
President,
Rangiora Scout Troop.
