Fire brigade driver's success

Proctor, won the first NZ road racing championship at Wigram in a 9 hp Riley bought cheaply from a North Island used-car yard; the car had won a two-day 100-mile Brooklands event in England in 1932. Proctor took 1hr 35min 56sec for 105 miles at 65.67 mph; Roycroft's supercharged Austin and Green's Wolseley Special thrilled the crowd of 25,000 to 30,000, and Mrs Lupp looked fit for another 100 miles.

Lap times

  • H. Green (Wolseley Special): 109 mph top speed

Facts

  • H. Green's Wolseley Special suffered petrol pump trouble early and he pumped by hand, yet reached 109 mph on the straight in the 1949 Wigram race.
